Transvaginal Ultrasonography

Transvaginal ultrasonography (TVUS) is a diagnostic imaging procedure used to examine the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and pelvic area. This technique involves the insertion of an ultrasound probe into the vagina, providing a closer and more detailed view of the pelvic structures compared to abdominal ultrasound.

Procedure

  • Preparation: The patient may be asked to empty her bladder before the procedure for better imaging clarity.
  • Positioning: The patient lies on an examination table with her feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam.
  • Probe Insertion: A lubricated, covered ultrasound probe, about the size of a tampon, is gently inserted into the vagina.
  • Imaging: The probe emits sound waves that create images of the pelvic organs on a monitor. The technician or doctor moves the probe slightly to get different angles and views.

Uses

  • Evaluating Ovarian Follicles: Monitors the development of ovarian follicles, particularly during fertility treatments like IVF.
  • Assessing Uterine Conditions: Detects abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, or structural issues within the uterus.
  • Monitoring Early Pregnancy: Confirms and monitors early pregnancy, including the location of the pregnancy (intrauterine or ectopic) and the viability of the embryo.
  • Diagnosing Pelvic Pain or Abnormal Bleeding: Helps determine the cause of pelvic pain, irregular bleeding, or other gynecological symptoms.
  • Evaluating Endometrial Lining: Measures the thickness and condition of the endometrial lining, important for assessing menstrual disorders and infertility issues.

Benefits

  • High Resolution: Provides high-resolution images that offer more detail than abdominal ultrasound.
  • Non-Invasive: Minimally invasive and generally well-tolerated by patients.
  • Quick and Convenient: Can be performed quickly in a doctor’s office or clinic without the need for anesthesia or extensive preparation.

Considerations

  • Mild Discomfort: Some patients may experience mild discomfort during the insertion of the probe.
  • Safety: Transvaginal ultrasonography is considered very safe, with no known risks from the ultrasound waves.

Transvaginal ultrasonography is a valuable tool in fertility treatments and general gynecological care, providing detailed images that aid in accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. At Precious IVF, we utilize TVUS to offer our patients the highest standard of care, ensuring thorough evaluation and personalized treatment approaches.
